Poland - Earthquakes

As of September 5th at 9:26am, Poland, Czechia, Germany, and Slovakia experienced a 4.0 earthquake. According to the Richter scale the 4.0 nature of this earthquake is considered to be 'light' while an 8 or more on the Richter scale is 'great' and causes extreme damage.  This natural hazard (earthquake) is not relatively common in Poland despite the fact that it is close to fault zones similar to Germany, and the Czech Republic.

This above is a seismic map

Similar to the seismic map the seismic source explains where the vibrations from an earthquake are created. The seismic map in general displays where hazards are in a variety of areas. In addition to that idea, they are generalized beliefs about the expected damage that can be incurred if earthquake shaking occurs in that area. They are extremely valuable to multitudes of people such as scientists and engineers. In regards to Poland, engineers can definitely utilize this map to meet standards on in progress buildings to make sure they are safe enough to support life and maintain their structure in the event of an earthquake; based on damage that is anticipated.

The concept of mitigation is important to understand for any natural hazard. The goal of mitigation techniques are to ensure that main sources of supply such as electricity, gas, water, wastewater, and most importantly communications are still available to those who are being affected by the hazard. A mitigation strategy used in Poland is implementing 'new building standards for residential and industrial construction'. In doing so, it will provide another layer of protection in the rare cases of earthquakes occurring in Poland. I imagine similarly to California and other states in the U.S. that heavy objects are secured in the event of earthquake, as it reduces the chances of those objects harming individuals. Essentially, mitigation aims to limit the potential of human life being obstructed or restricted regardless of the natural hazard.
